Pianist Alim Beisembayev – Wednesday 20 September
Pianist Alim Beisembayev, First Prize winner at The Leeds International Piano Competition in September 2021, will be playing a programme of Beethoven, Debussy and Ravel at Brighton College on Wednesday 30 September 2023.

Tyzer
Tyzer started playing at Springboard when he was around 10 years old in the violin and piano classes and has continued to take part since.
He has been teaching violin and piano for 4 years and has accompanied one of his violin students on the piano in her Grade 1 exam. He started composing during the Covid Lockdowns and realised that is what he loves doing.
He applied to various conservatoires in October, after teaching himself composition. He really didn’t think he would get in, but had several offers. He will be starting his BMus (Hons) course in Composition at RNCM (Royal Northern College of Music) in September.
He also plays in a jazz band called Squint (as there are 5 of them) and writes some of the music for the band.
String Ensemble concert to raise funds for music bursaries
On 12 October 2022, Brighton & East Sussex Orchestra’s String Ensemble celebrates 150 years of Vaughan Williams in a concert to raise money for bursaries for children and young people who would otherwise be unable to access music education.
Tickets are by donation and all money raised will go to Encore, the fundraising arm of Create Music, the music hub for Brighton & Hove and East Sussex. Donations will enable families with low incomes to access music making opportunities across the region.

Congratulations to the Astatine Trio
The Astatine Trio – pianist Berniya Hamie, violinist Julia Błachuta and cellist Riya Hamie – was formed by three award-winning young musicians at the Royal College of Music in 2021. Berniya and Riya are both former winners of Springboard.
They have just won the First Prize 
at The International Virtuoso & Belcanto Chamber Music Competition in Lucca, Italy.

The mathematics of musical coincidence
Springboard sponsor, Eugenia Cheng, was on ‘More or Less’ on Radio 4 this week considering the question of how many possible melodic combinations there are of the major and minor scale. It’s an interesting listen and is available on BBC Sounds.
Heather Cowl
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our Piano Section Secretary, Heather Cowl.
Heather was involved with Springboard for many years and was an invaluable member of the Piano Section respected for her knowledge, passion and sense of humour.
She will be greatly missed.

Brenock O’Connor – inspiring the next generation
We are delighted to announce that Brenock O’Connor, who has taken part in Springboard for many years, is to become a patron of Springboard.He has worked on productions such as Game of Thrones, The Bromley Boys, Dickensian and has recently finished shooting the second series of Alex Rider for Amazon Prime. His theatre credits include Oliver! (Tour), Plastic (Ustinov, Theatre Royal Bath), Goodbye Rosetta (Camden/Edinburgh Fringe) and Sing Street: The Musical (NYTW, original cast). He also performs and produces music under his pseudonym, McGovern.
